Overall, Nantou County is a stunning and authentic Taiwanese destination that offers a mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor adventure.
Nantou is the 2nd largest county in Taiwan. This mountainous county located in central Taiwan is the only area that doesn’t boast a coast. Endless trails, starlit skies, damp moss, rain, wet tree trunks, flowers, life, beauty, are but a few words that describe Nantou County. This is an amazing place where mountains and seas of green trees dominate the landscape! This is an excellent place to travel to if one seeks fresh air, cooler weather, peace, tranquility, and hiking.
Dalushan Lookout 🚗
The weather kinda sucked when I went here, but I had a very good photography session. It was rainy and foggy, but I managed to capture some really nice shots. It did clear up at times and you got a nice wide view up high. There is a tea plantation here.
Sun Moon lake 🚗❤️🏠📸⭐
Beautiful lake area with an amusement park if you’re into that. Temples along the lake. It's beautiful. The Thao people were the aboriginal people of this area. It is said a white deer led the people to this area where food and water were plentiful. You want to go here. Lots to explore and very beautiful!
Shuiyuan Suspension Bridge 🚗🏠📸⭐
The Rainbow bridge. It’s a long rainbow-colored suspension bridge. There is a waterfall on the other side. I enjoyed it. I think it's worth checking out. It costs 100 NTD to enter the village by bus that drops you off and then it's about 1 KM to reach the bridge. I am not sure if it's free to enter the village by foot.
Nenggao Falls 🚗
Easy waterfall to drive to. It’s blocked by a fence, which makes it kinda suck.
Guanyin Falls 🚗
A short hike and a decent waterfall to check out.
Menggu Waterfall 🚗❤️🏠📸⭐
YES, PLEASE! Dope spot for a picnic, awesome waterfall. YES! YES! YES! 100NTD to get in. I also saw a 2–3-meter snake, slithering along the parking lot. Easy to get to, barely any walking.
The Old England Manor 🚗❤️
This is some European architecture as you move up the mountains. My boy tried flying his drone to get shots, some guy that worked there wouldn’t let him. They got in an argument in Mandarin, and my boy just walked down a bit, hid, and flew his drone. When I got mine, I did the same thing, minus the argument.
Hehuanshan 🚗⭐
A mountain that has snow during the winter months if you're lucky. It's a good hike and beautiful! I am not sure of the location, but they opened Taiwan's first international dark sky park. It's the first certified one in Taiwan, and the 3rd in Asia. It is 2750 meters above sea level and it's for star gazers and of course photographers. On a good night, the nightscape is amazing!
Wuling 🚗⭐
I’ve been here twice. I have mixed feelings about it. It's beautiful. You’re up in the mountains, if it's cold enough there's snow. Good for hiking and landscapes but it can get way too crowded. The 2nd time I came here I drove up and just left. I drove from Taichung. It was too crowded. Drove all the way up and bounced. I was just way too frustrated to deal with parking and crowds.
Yuanfeng Lookout 🚗❤️🏠📸⭐
Ok, I think the international dark sky park is here or very close. Read Hehuanshan, above. If you like star gazing, it's a must, but it can get crowded and if you are taking long exposures of the night sky and there are people there, expect tour guides to shine their lights into the sky. It pissed me off, but everyone has to enjoy it right?
Dexing Falls 🚗❤️🏠
Was a nice little spot. By the parking lot is a small waterfall but going up stairs there is a better one. However, even on a weekday when I went, there were people. For a photographer it's super annoying. The kids are ethnocentric and don’t care what you’re doing. The parents did respect my attempts to shoot the falls. The old man was also ethnocentric and decided to block my whole shot by fishing. Don’t see the point of fishing in a small pool with people and kids wading there, but whatever. I did manage to get some shots. Either way, you got to go and I’ll explain in my favorite drives, later.
Ruilong Waterfall 🚗❤️🏠📸⭐
My directions will lead you to a parking lot and the cost to enter is 100NTD. Taiwan babies you. They created a whole pathway, suspension bridge, and more to make your walk super easy. Easily accessible but in some ways takes away from the beauty of being in nature, nevertheless, it was a beautiful walk to a very beautiful waterfall at the end. I was a little bummed I couldn’t go down to check out the waterfall in detail, as I was mainly on a platform the whole time. If you look at the reviews, there's a young woman who managed to get down there. I did not know there was a way down. Would have made it way better if I knew how to get there. Still, worth seeing.
NOTE- I learned how to flag and heart on my Google Maps 2 years AFTER coming to Taiwan. There are loads of more things I can mention about Nantou but I don’t remember their names. There is a very popular ice cream shop in Puli. There is also a very lavish looking Buddhist temple. It was actually pretty damn amazing in terms of how much money was put into it. There are also super cool forests and trails. I can’t give you all the game, you also got to explore some for yourself. ;)
